![]() We applied a coat of Minwax Wood Conditioner and then two quick coats of Minwax Special Walnut. Now you’ll want to sand the board smooth and proceed to finish as desired. The gap is barely noticeable, but if you want your wooden panel to sit flush with the wall then you’ll have to purchase a board with a greater depth than 16” inches. We intentionally wanted a recessed area on the back wall behind the wooden top so we can run a Hue light strip here in the future. Now, once the doors are attached the depth is a tiny bit too short. Purchase a project panel that fits your desired dimensions. Now it’s time to get started on the wooden top.Once the suspension rails were securely attached to the wall, we then hung and attached the BESTA frames and then installed the doors. The suspension rails actually come with pre-drilled holes, but not all of these lined up with the studs in our wall so Eric used a metal bit to drill additional holes in the rails so we could attach them to each stud across the length of the cabinets. At this point we installed the suspension rails on our wall, ensuring we screwed them into as many studs as possible.Feel free to use a pencil to draw a straight line to assist with the mounting of the cabinet. From there, we marked each stud along the length of the console. ![]() Then we determined the center point on our basement wall.Once home, we assembled the frames sans shelves and doors. We purchased (2) BESTA Frames, (4) BESTA Suspension Rails, (4) BESTA Shelves, (4) BESTA Soft closing/push-open hinges, and (4) LAPPVIKEN Doors from IKEA. ![]() Stay tuned to see how I decorate these floating shelves in our living room. So, here’s a quick rundown on how we built and installed our floating console: I love shelf styling, so this is going to be so fun! I can’t wait to decorate these floating shelves! I have so much room to add pictures, art, and other decorative objects. I love how they add lots of interest but they still have a light feeling and don’t overwhelm the space. These shelves make this wall look so much more complete. We now have beautiful, floating shelves in our living room. Once the shelves were attached together, we were done. And once I decorate the shelves, it will be even less noticeable. They aren’t perfect, but it’s barely noticeable. We made sure to use a level to get the shelves to match up as close as possible. To match up the two shelves and get rid of the uneven gap, we tightened mending plates down using screws. We attached the mending plates evenly spaced on the upper shelves. You can’t really see anything from the ground so no one would notice the plates. On the upper shelf, it wasn’t as big of a deal, because that shelf is so high up on the wall. That way, you wouldn’t be able to see the plate. ![]() ![]() On the lower shelf, we installed the mending plates toward the back of the shelves against the wall. To make the shelves look like one complete piece, we attached them together using a few mending plates. Once the shelves were installed, you could tell where the gap was between the two different sizes. To attach the shelves to the wall, you first install a metal bracket.Īfter it’s securely attached to the wall, the shelf just slips over the bracket and you attach the two pieces together with some screws along the back of the shelf. We attached the smaller shelf first on the left side. This allowed us to mark off the floating shelves locations using a pencil.Īfter the locations we marked, we installed each shelf. Then, we adjusted it to create a level line on the media center wall. We attached the level to the wall on the opposite side of the room. ![]()
